Appliqué Basics
If you have avoided machine embroidery
appliqué designs, you don't know what you're missing. Appliqué may first appear daunting, but it is easier than you may think and sports several advantages.
Most obviously, appliqué will shorten
the time it takes to complete a design. Usually this technique is used in places where large fill areas might appear. In addition, appliqué adds dimension and interest to a project. The degree of dimensional effect created depends upon appliqué fabric choice and the design itself. Can you imagine a dinosaur appliquéd with felt, using fill shading, satins and radials to sculpt the appliqué fabric? Instead of a flat, one dimensional filled design, that dinosaur now leaps off your project, rippling with muscles, teeth bared, staring back at you with glittering eyes. The effect can be quite stunning. |

Sudsy, above, is an
appliqué design. The tooth is done in white felt, which makes the tooth look sculpted and rounded a bit...just like a real tooth.
