Do not stretch the appliqué fabric. DO smooth any wrinkles. If you are
having difficulty with puckering, lightly
spray the wrong side of the appliqué
fabric with embroidery spray adhesive.
Do NOT spray the garment, and I
emphasis LIGHTLY. Then lay the
fabric over the mark and gently smooth.
This will help immensely, especially on
fabrics that are lighter weight and tend to bunch.

A tacking stitch will sew next. This can be a
running stitch or a very light density zigzag.
Again, heed any instructions. Invisible thread is
sometimes called for if the finished edge is to have a bean border, quilt
stitch border, etc. Invisible thread can tack down and finish the appliqué
while a more noticeable outline stitch provides unique detail.

When the tacking stitch completes, remove the hooped item from the
machine. DO NOT UNHOOP. Be mindful of the hooped fabric,
handling by the hoop edges. Lay the hoop on a flat surface, so that
nothing will disturb your embroidery area. Gently and carefully trim
away any excess. Lifting the excess as you trim, but not pulling, is
helpful in getting close to the tacking line. Trim as close as possible,
without cutting the marking stitch. Then carefully return the hoop to the
machine and continue.
BitsyBee has appliqué
wings with a stipple fill
over the applique.
