Fabric choice is another very
important consideration. Once
again, consulting the designer's
instructions is crucial. A special
type, weight, color, or textured
fabric may be required so that the
intended result is achieved. If the
digitizer intended felt to be used, the
finishing edge may be specifically
digitized with that fabric in mind
(width of the finished edge, etc).

Then again, you may be able to skip
the appliqué process altogether if
you think the design would work
well with the garment showing
through where the appliqué was
intended.
This little bear has a stitched belly
and detail on the face and feet.
The body is intended to be
appliqué. However, if you are
stitching on a polar fleece, then
letting the fleece show through
may look charming.

If the appliqué area would make
sense blank, depending upon your
substrate, just skip the mark and
tack stitches. Allow yourself to
think out of the box, but test when
any question arises.

Finally, go on a window shopping
spree. Look for appliqué on
garments, especially at retailers
like Disney, where embroidery is
everywhere. Make mental notes
about fabric choice, color,
textures, etc, with regard to those
appliquéd garments. Once you
try appliqué, you'll love the way it
adds versatility and interest to
your embroidery
